Arts-X-press is a summer arts immersion program for 7th and 8th grade students created by the Pacific Symphony in celebration of Cole Carsan St.Clair. 150 students are nominated by teachers throughout Orange County to come together for 5 days of creative exploration each summer. The program has two goals: 1) To expose students to all 5 performing and visual arts; and 2) To foster respect for and interest in each student’s individuality, talents, interests, and background.

Week 3 Day 4

Hello everyone, its Garret here, one of the counselors from Week 3. Its been a long day for arts-X-pressers. Today, the students spent all day on the UCI Campus.

The day began out by getting to sleep in a whole FIFTEEN minutes more! All the arts-X-pressers were thrilled by that news and it ay not seem like fifteen minutes is a lot, but in the world of arts-X-press that is an eternity. After a quick stop into the Arts Mart, the students went on to breakfast. From there, the students went to their last session of Creative Expression where they spent time putting the finishing touches on thier projects for the Parent Presentation. After Creative Expression, the artists spent their last day in their arts workshop preparing thier preformances.

After a delicious lunch, which was...EXTENDED, the students made thier way to what is known as the Black Box, where the students were given the opportunity of a life time to work with world famous artist Richard McDonald. The students were able to do some sculpting, which they will be bringing home for you all to enjoy. From there we headed to our Last Supper, a yes that is a pun on the Pagent of the Masters. We then changed into our arts-X-press shirts for the parent preformance and then took many many pictures that will be trasured forever within arts-X-press history.

Then it was the time that everyone had been preparing, the Parent Presentation! A night full of singing, instrumental music, dance, theater, and visual art along with some extravagent poetry. After three minutes of warm home felt hugs and firmiliar faces the students got back onto the stage to sing the arts-X-press song.

After you parents left, the fun really began. We started the talent show after reading some room checks that made me personally cringe. Some highlights of the talent show included Jaws on the piano, a hilarious skit about superheroes, and an amazing skit that was prepared by your wonderful counselors. We then moved from the talent show to the PARTY! Here we enjoyed some dancing beats, lemonade, and brownies! We then made the long walk back to Middle Earth where we took our last three minute showers and bid the night goodbye.

Your kids have been a pleasure to work with and I have been honored to see them grow not only as artists but also young adults. I hope to see you all at the reunion and I wish you all the best in your future.

Later dudes, your counsleor

Week Three Day Three

It was a long day for everyone at arts-X-press.

The students were woken up at 7:00 this morning by their counselors. One of our counselors blasted music to the students as their "Alarm Clock." The students came down to visit Arts Mart and say goodmorning to Darci, Carrie and Shannon. Then it was time for breakfast. The students chatted while eating, many of them talking about what they were expecting out of today and the excursion to Festival of the Arts and Pageant of the Masters.

The students then went on to their Creative Expression class, where they were all busy preparing for the Parent Presentation that is happening tomorrow. From their CE class, the students went to Arts Workshop where they were all enjoying each others company, while learning a little more about the arts. It was then time for a quick lunch, where we were joined by four of our Pacific Symphony Musicians and then we got on the arts-X-press Party Bus and headed to the Pageant grounds.

When we arrived at the Festival of the Arts, we received a one-of-a-kind backstage tour of the Pageant of the Masters. The students had the chance to see how they make 3 dimensional objects turn into 2 Dimensional paintings, with the help of Stage Magic. They were all pumped to see the performance.

Following the tour, the students had the opportunity to express their creativity and artisitic skills. Each student got the chance to do 3 art projects: Paint a Raku Pot, do Printmaking and a mixed media piece of art. We have got some amazing talent with us this week.

It was then time for a quick water break and then all the staff and students went to visit the Dawson Cole Fine Art Gallery where they saw the amazing work of Scupture artist Richard MacDonald. It was a preview of what an amazing opportunity they will have tomorrow when they get to take part in a Spotlight workshop led by Richard MacDonald. Students then walked from the Gallery to Heisler Park where they then had some time to talk about their talent show ideas and play some games with one another. The games built up an appetite in all of our students, so we ate our dinner at the park with a very special guest, Carl St. Clair and his family. This gave the students an opportunity to ask Carl more questions.

After our delicious pizza was polished off, it was then time to head on back to the Pageant grounds. Each family group had some time to tour the artwork of local artists and then it was time for The Pageant of the Masters. The students enjoyed the performance and were amazed at the magical transformation of the art.

It had been a long day so after the show, the students hopped back on the bus and headed on back to UCI Campus for three minute showers and bed. It had been a long day and they are all so excited to show you all their hard work this week at tomorrow's Parent Presentation.
