Arts-X-press is a summer arts immersion program for 7th and 8th grade students created by the Pacific Symphony in celebration of Cole Carsan St.Clair. 150 students are nominated by teachers throughout Orange County to come together for 5 days of creative exploration each summer. The program has two goals: 1) To expose students to all 5 performing and visual arts; and 2) To foster respect for and interest in each student’s individuality, talents, interests, and background.

Session Two, Day Two

Day Two was full of fun for the arts-X-press artists. After our morning Creative Expression and Arts Workshops and a fantastic lunch in the cafeteria, including plenty of ice cream and a chance to talk with the Symphony musicians who joined us, we headed off to the Fullerton Civic Light Opera to see Smokey Joe’s CafĂ©, a musical based on the music of Elvis Presley. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance along with the amazing talk-back they had with the actors following the performance. A popular question for the actors was how they prepared for their stage careers.

After we returned from the performance, the students hurried on over to eat dinner and then got the chance to meet musicians from the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra. The musicians spoke with us a little about who they were, what instrument they play and how they like being in the Youth Orchestra.

From there, all the arts-X-pressers took part in a Spotlight Theatre Workshop. We’ve got some very talented actors on our hands! As a wrap up for the night, we had bonding, where the students got to sit and share one person who they appreciate at home and one person who they appreciate at arts-X-press. It’s amazing to hear how everyone has developed all these friendships after only two days. The students are really connecting with one another and the arts-X-press MAGIC is really coming alive this week!

It is a wonderful thing to be able to see what you are all up to. Better yet is seeing Congher's smiling face!
