Arts-X-press is a summer arts immersion program for 7th and 8th grade students created by the Pacific Symphony in celebration of Cole Carsan St.Clair. 150 students are nominated by teachers throughout Orange County to come together for 5 days of creative exploration each summer. The program has two goals: 1) To expose students to all 5 performing and visual arts; and 2) To foster respect for and interest in each student’s individuality, talents, interests, and background.

Week One Day Two by Rachel

Sunday was a busy day for arts-X-press Session One! We started the morning with our Creative Expression classes. In some of our classes today we wrote "I Am" poems and worked on collage posters. You will hear all about these projects at the Parent Presentation on Tuesday night.

After Creative Expression we had our Arts Workshop classes. Our theme this week is "Syncopation" and you can tell we are learning a lot! In visual art we are learning about cubism and in dance we are learning about swing dancing. We are all taking a lot of creative risks and the magic buttons are starting to pop up all over the place! In the afternoon we had the amazing opportunity to visit the Orange County Performing Arts Center and watch a performance of Sleeping Beauty by the American Ballet Theater. The costumes were beautiful and we all loved the pyrotechnics!

When we returned to campus we had a great presentation about the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra and a Spotlight Theater Workshop where we practiced imagination with our theme of syncopation.

Our final activity of the evening was bonding. Everyone in the program had an opportunity to share about a person they appreciated at home and another person they appreciated at the program. Many of us learned how we had an impact on another's life without even knowing it!

It was a great day and we are looking forward to our day in Laguna Beach tomorrow!
